Protest  targets State Visiting Policy

SOLEDAD, Calif. (AP) - Dozens of people gathered outside the Salinas Valley State Prison to protest the state's policy on visiting inmates.

Sunday's protest by prisoners' relatives was organized by the Sacramento-based United for No Injustice, Oppression or Neglect.

B. Cayenne Bird of Sacramento, the group's founder, said she has been unable to see her son at the state prison in Salinas Valley for the past six months because a guard claimed Bird assaulted her.

Inmates must fill out a form before each visit but Bird said some mentally ill inmates cannot do so and their relatives have been unable to see them.

"What they're saying is that these prisoners are (their) property and therefore no better than cows," she said.

Maria Molina of Salinas said she was protesting over being unable to see her uncle, Larry Saldivar, before he died in June at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione.

The family was denied visitation when he was ill, she said.

"I believe families should be notified when their loved ones are on their death beds," Molina said. "They denied us that, and my uncle died alone."

Officials at the Salinas Valley prison declined to comment.

The story appeared nationwide but the above publications are places you should write right away with letters to editors of less than 200 words  The amount of press coverage always depends on the size of  the crowd.  It was a big success by any measure, you  should always be writing about your problems in visiting to editors, you have a maiden name to protect your loved one - why not use your pens, protest signs and help the families in the UNION fight these battles so things will get better?
