A guest post today from Megan Brown , my friend from across the pond – you may or not agree with these slightly sneaky methods but they might come in useful!
How to Help Him Choose Your Ring without Helping Him Choose Your Ring
You’ve got the perfect cinematic marriage proposal dreamt up: roses, a starlit night overlooking a city of lights, a flowy dress and a gentle breeze, your boyfriend dropping to one knee with a giddy smirk and finally popping the question: “Will You Marry Me?”
Your smile reaches clear up to your ears, he opens the box and — you finally see the ring: a gaudy, bejeweled cluster of cubic zirconia set in a gold band. Oh. No. Smile? What smile?
In a society that loves hearing about marriages and proposals, the only thing we probably love more is seeing pictures of sparkly, stunning engagement rings.
And while you’ll love your husband no matter what, you’ll wear that ring for the rest of your life, so it might as well look good, right? That’s not asking too much.
So, what can you do to guarantee you’ll have both an amazing ring and a heart-stopping surprise? The answer: help him choose your ring without helping choose your ring.
- Lave Tabs Open on His Computer: You remember that time you accidentally left your Facebook open on his browser and he saw that you were planning him a surprise party. Yeah, that didn’t go so well, but you were onto something. Leave a tab or window open on his browser the next time you use his computer and when he sits down, he’ll see that you’ve been perusing online jewelry sites, with a specific focus on engagement rings. If he’s smart, he’ll check the Internet history and see you were at it for hours. He’ll see that you put several rings on your ‘favorites’ list and when it comes time for him to make a purchase, he’ll certainly use that list as a reference.
- Sign Him Up for Mailing Lists: Let’s face it, mailing lists can be a little irritating, but they’re great for irritating other people. If you love the rings a certain site sells, type his email address into the mailing list box. And, just to make sure it doesn’t go over his head and he unsubscribes in an angry huff while proclaiming, “They’ve got the wrong person”, sign him up for several mailing lists from several sites. When he gets 14 engagement ring newsletters a week, a light bulb is sure to go off in his brain sooner or later. If he knows the right places to look, it’ll be hard to go wrong with the ring itself.
- Work the In-Law Angle: What does every guy do when he doesn’t know what else to do? He asks his mom. Once you suspect he’s going to propose, go straight to his mom. She probably has inkling, too. Tell her what you like and don’t like in an engagement ring so she’ll prepared with an arsenal of information once he goes to ask. And moms never forget anything, so you won’t have to worry about that. These simple steps should ward off the gaudy ring you saw in that nightmarish rendition of your marriage proposal and guarantee something much more charming.
